Travel Guide :: Ambergris Caye, Belize

June 5, 2017 in belize, fashion, style, sunshine, travel, vacation

One month ago, I was soaking up the sun in Belize.  Today, I’m sitting here on my couch writing this post.  I bet you can guess where I’d rather be πŸ™‚Shop this look: Draper James Cover Up | Ray Bans | Navy Hat | Sandals Ambergris Caye is the largest island in Belize and is a great place for a relaxing and fun vacation.  San Pedro is the only town on the island and is very welcoming to tourists!  How to get to Ambergris Caye:To travel to the island, you have to first fly to Belize City.   Once you are in Belize City, you then have to either take a cab to the water taxi or hop on a puddle jumper at the airport that takes you to the island. We opted for the water taxi since it was only $35 round trip compared to about $125.  The water taxi is about an hour and 15 minute ride, but goes by quickly when you’re with your friends! Side note: if you get sea sick easily, be sure to sit in the front by the window.  The gorgeous view from the plane! Transportation:The main form of transportation on the island is by golf cart.  Yes, golf cart! We had a group of 11 and rented 3 golf carts for the week.  Be sure to arrange your golf cart rental before arrival and the company will meet you at the water taxi or airport. Accommodations:Like any other destination, there are hotels available that you can stay at.  However, for a more authentic experience, I would recommend staying in a house or a condo. There are plenty of houses available on VRBO and AirBNB.    We stayed at the Villa Mandevilla and found the house through AirBNB. Check it out here. Villa Mandevilla was a gorgeous house that fit our group of 11 perfectly.  It can sleep up to 18 people! The house has a small private beach area, hammocks, paddle boards, kayaks, and best of all, an infinity pool.  We had a caretaker who checked on us daily and made sure we had everything we needed.  He also came to save the day when the battery died on one of the golf carts! The one downside on the Villa Mandevilla is that it sits on the south part of the island.  The locals call this area “Mosquito Coast.”  They weren’t lying.  It was about a 30 minute golf ride in to town and we couldn’t go anywhere without bug spray.  If I go back, I’ll be staying in town! Here’s a glimpse of the infinity pool! Shop this look: Amanda Uprichard Romper (similar) | Men’s Linen Shorts | Men’s Button Down (similar) Activities:My recap of the activities that you can do on the island only captures a small variety compared to everything that is available. The Chicken Drop: Every Thursday night at Wahoo’s, the chicken drop takes place. I like to call this chicken poop bingo.  Crazy, right?! How it works: You place a $1 bet and are given a random number 1-100 and then you wait for the chicken to do its business on a number. If the chicken lands on your number, you win the money pot! But first, you must clean up the poop. This is definitely a must see experience.  Fly Fishing: The saltwater flats of Ambergris Caye are famous for their bonefish, tarpon, and especially permit. My boyfriend and his friends took guided fly fishing trips three of the days during our stay.  They booked their trips through Tres Pescados, a full service fly shop.  This was my boyfriend’s second year to fish with Tres Pescados and he has not been disappointed.  He even caught his first Permit last year.  I’ve been told it’s the fish of 1,000 casts!  Find out more information on Tres Pescados here.   Snorkeling: The Belize Barrier Reef is the second largest continuous barrier reef only behind the Great Barrier Reef. This makes it an awesome place for scuba diving and snorkeling. There are a few different places on the island where you can schedule a snorkeling day, but we scheduled ours through our caretaker.  The cost was $45/person and we spent about 3 hours snorkeling on the beautiful reef. We saw some amazing fish and I wish I would’ve had an underwater camera to share all of those images with you!  We also saw an eel and a shark and that’s when I decided to get out of the water!!  If you decide to take a snorkeling trip, learn from my experience and be sure to take your sea sickness medicine! Shop this look: J. Crew Swim Suit | Ray Bans | Polo Hat Bars & Restaurants:There are quite a few places to grab a quick drink or a bite to eat.  Here are a few of my favorites! Fido’s: Fido’s was my favorite place of the entire trip! It is a fun open-air bar that is right on the water.  It has live music, good drinks, and a great atmosphere! It’s also the perfect spot to hide out during a rainstorm πŸ˜‰ Check out there website here. Shop this look: Romper (similar) | Ray Bans | Sandals Street Food: At night, the center of town is full of street food vendors. This is the Belizean form of fast food and like an American food truck.  You can get anything from chicken tacos to a shrimp burger in a matter of minutes for only $4!
Lilly’s Treasure Chest: We learned of this restaurant from the fishing guide. He said that it was the best ceviche in town! I think the seafood eaters in the group (everyone but me!) would agree.

Palapa Bar and Grill: This is another open-air bar and restaurant.  This is a very cool place because it sits over the water!  There is also an area that is roped off for swimming.
Travel Tips:Be sure to bring cash. American money is accepted and the exchange rate is always 2:1.  Credit cards are also accepted, but mainly Visa and MasterCard. Stay on the north end of the island or in town to avoid the bugs! Shop this look: J. Crew Swim Suit | Ray Bans Have you been to Belize?  If so, do you have any favorite places, activities, or tips that you would add to the list?  Let me know in the comments below! xo,

This past year brought big milestones: Ellie Kate making her arrival in January, launching @elliegraycreativeco in February, stepping into my role as @juniorleaguews president, to name a few!

Thank you for being here and following along through it all πŸ’› Cheers to another year πŸ₯‚
