Book Review: Slightly South of Simple by Kristy Woodsen Harvey

May 1, 2018 in book review

Y’all, it’s no secret. I’m a sucker for a good book that takes place in the South.  I was excited when I discovered author Kristy Woodsen Harvey and her novel, Slightly South of Simple.  This is her third novel, and first in the Peachtree Bluff series.  I’m not kidding when I tell you I could not put this book down.  It’s that good!

The story revolves around Ansley Murphy, a widow whose husband, Carter, was killed in the World Trade Center attacks in 2001.  Ansley has become a successful interior decorator since her husband’s death, but she has also been living with his dark secrets, which she has been able to keep to herself…at least for now.
One summer, personal trials and troubles brought each of Ansley’s three daughters back to Peachtree Bluff to live with their mother.  Caroline is a New York socialite with a dislike for the South.  Sloane is a military wife whose husband has been deployed yet again. Ansley’s third daughter, Emerson, is an up-and-coming actress in Los Angeles whose new movie is filming near Peachtree Bluff. Ansley’s daughters aren’t the only ones to make a return visit to Peachtree Bluff.  An old flame is back in town, and it seems that he is here to stay.  Will this disrupt Ansley’s plans to have a peaceful summer?  Will she be able to keep the family secrets?

The book is filled with mother/daughter/sister relationships and shows just how strong a family bond can be.  You will get to read a little about each daughter’s story and those stories are definitely slightly south of simple. 🙂

If you like Mary Kay Andrews and Dorthea Benton Frank, Kristy Woodsen Harvey will definitely make it to the top of your favorite author list. If you have never read one of Kristy Woodsen Harvey’s books, I think this is a great place to start.

Get your copy of Slightly South of Simple here.

I’m excited to read the next book in the Peachtree Bluff series, The Secret to Southern Charm. What is one of your favorite books you would like for me to read?  Let me know in the comments below.

Happy reading!

9 years of Kristie in Carolina and 10 since I made this place home! Life looks a little different these days (hello, two kids two and under 👶🏼👶🏼), and I don’t post as often as I’d like, but I’m grateful for all of you!

This past year brought big milestones: Ellie Kate making her arrival in January, launching @elliegraycreativeco in February, stepping into my role as @juniorleaguews president, to name a few!

Thank you for being here and following along through it all 💛 Cheers to another year 🥂
