I’m excited to finally be able to share my first book review with y’all! Mary Kay Andrews has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Her books are so much fun and have just the right amount of suspense mixed in with a little romance.
I recently finished reading The Fixer Upper which revolves around Dempsey Jo Killebrew, a Washington DC lobbyist, and the trouble that she has gotten herself into.
Dempsey finds herself in the middle of a Washington political scandal. Her former boss is being investigated by the FBI for bribery and tries to lay the blame all on Dempsey. Dempsey reaches out to her father for help and he suggests a change of scenery. Mitch, Dempsey’s father, has recently inherited an old house called “Birdsong,” in the small town of Guthrie, Georgia. Mitch offers Dempsey the chance to head to Guthrie and fix up the old house to put on the market.
When Dempsey arrives in Guthrie, she realizes she can’t just slap a coat of paint on the house and sell it. It needs work… a lot of work. To say it is a “fixer upper” is an understatement! Dempsey also soon discovers that a squatter has been living in the house! It turns out the squatter, Ella Kate, is a distant relative of Dempsey’s. Ella Kate believes the house is rightfully hers since she had been taking care of the man who had lived there and passed away. Ella Kate provides a good laugh throughout the book.
During Dempsey’s time in Guthrie, she meets Tee Berryhill, the son of a local lawyer. Will Dempsey find love with Tee? Will the FBI investigation get in the way of them finding their passion? What kind of trouble will Ella Kate cause for Dempsey?
I would definitely recommend this book! I think you will find yourself rooting for Dempsey as she not only restores the house, but learns to restore herself.

Three other books written by Mary Kay Andrews that I would recommend are Savannah Breeze, Save the Date, and The Weekenders. Do you have a favorite book you would like for me to read and review? Let me know in the comments below.
Happy reading!
